Reading office workers or residents looking to organise a Christmas party are being urged to check out the ‘star ratings’ of restaurants or food stores they plan to visit for their festive fare.
At the click of a button people can find out how hygienic the businesses are thanks to Reading Borough Council’s Food Safety Star Rating Scheme.
Food premises inspected by Reading’s Environmental Health Officers are given a star rating based on how they performed in terms of hygiene, structural condition and management of food safety.
There are six scores – zero stars is the worst and five stars the best – and they are published on Reading Borough Council’s website at www.reading.gov.uk/foodsafety or at www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk.
More than 900 food businesses in the Reading borough have been surveyed as part of the scheme which is aimed at improving food safety in Reading and giving people a more informed choice about where to eat and buy food.
One such Reading eatery is curry house Spice Oven of Church St, Caversham. The curry house scored excellently at the last inspection carried out by the Council’s food hygiene team and will shortly be awarded yet another `5 star’ rating for food safety by Reading’s Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability Paul Gittings.
Reading Councillor Gittings said: "If you’re looking for somewhere to host your office Christmas party or thinking about ordering food in and want to check out food hygiene scores, take a few minutes to check the star rating on the Council’s website. This scheme has proved to be a big hit with people, particularly at this time of year. I would say its well worth taking a few minutes to check before you book."
