A vibrant two week festival of events and activities for children of all ages is returning to Reading.
The very popular Reading Children’s Festival returns for its 24th year on Saturday, May 18th, with an action packed two weeks of fun and games for everyone at venues across Reading.
The festival gets off to a flying start with Meadow Madness this Saturday. There will be something for everyone, with sport and music workshops, fun days with art and craft sessions.
This year’s Meadow Madness has a wild animal theme, so go along and join in the wild and wacky fun at the ‘larger than life’ explorer workshops running throughout the day. Try your hand at juggling, uni-cycling, hand-held stilts, spinning plates and walking the tight-wire. The Council’s play rangers will be organising mini sports competitions and the Jelly crew will be making lion masks.
From 11am-3.30pm there will be live entertainment from a variety of local groups and performers at the arena in the middle of Chirstchurch Meadows, where Meadow Madness takes place.
Reading Children’s Festival takes place from May 18th – June 2nd and boasts a varied programme of activities.
A variety of craft workshops and exciting experiences have been organised for children at Reading’s libraries, Reading Museum and sport and leisure centres throughout the fun packed fortnight, including superhero crafts at Central Library on May 31st and decorate your own giant person at Whitley Library also on May 31st.
During the May half-term holiday (May 27th-31st), there is a week of free family fun taking place at various venues.
Some much loved children’s TV characters will be making an appearance at Broad Street Mall. And if you’ve always fancied trying canoeing, then why not go along to a series of free one hour sessions taking place at Reading Canoe Club in Caversham from 10am-4pm.
There is also the chance to try an Olympic sport, with free sessions being run at various venues by fully qualified coaches from Reading Football Club, Reading Rockets Basketball Club, Reading Athletics Club, Reading Royals Synchronised Squad, Reading CTC (the national cycling charity) and Reading Sport and Leisure.
If swimming’s more your thing, there’s a free parent and toddler coached swim session at Central Pool in Battle Street, during half-term and free swimming for kids at Central Pool, Highdown & Academy Sport.
Marian Livingston, Reading’s lead councillor for culture and sport, said: “Reading Children’s Festival is always a fantastic event. The town is absolutely bustling with families during the fortnight who come from miles around to enjoy all the festival has to offer. There’s something for everyone and plenty to do, its tremendous fun and I hope to see lots of children enjoying this year’s events.”

The needs and expectations of older Reading people are changing all the time. The Council wants to ensure that our Day Care Services keep pace with these changes – now and in the future.
As part of this process we are consulting to find out what Reading services are required and how these should be provided.
For example, one idea might be to build an Older People’s Resource Centre, which could offer:
•Facilities which are easy to access/use for people with disabilities or limited mobility;
•A varied programme of activities providing opportunities for people to socialise, stay fit and well and develop new interests;
•Easy access to Reading advice and support services;
•Specialist support to help people maintain and restore independence;
•Support which enables people to take part fully in day services and give family/carers a well earned break;
•Opportunities to take part in volunteering
But there are lots of alternatives – we would like to hear your ideas and suggestions about how day care services could change for the future.
If you …
•use Reading day care services now;
•look after/have looked after someone who depends on these services or
•have a personal or professional interest in helping shape services for older people in the future
Please take part in our Let’s Talk Care consultation and let us know how you think day care services for older people should be developed for the future.
