Refurbished Reading Sheltered Homes to go on Show

Newly refurbished sheltered accommodation flats are to go on show to prospective tenants in Reading.

Starting this weekend (October 24th and 25th), and taking place the following weekend (Oct 31st, Nov 1st), Reading Borough Council owned sheltered flats in Tilehurst and Woodley, will be open for people to look around and see what sheltered living has to offer.

Existing Reading tenants in Woodlands Court, Woodley and at the accommodation in Liebenrood Road and Corwen Road in Tilehurst, will welcome the visitors to their homes during two sessions taking place each day.

Prospective tenants will be taken by coach to each venue and shown around the flats available to rent. Reading Borough Council housing staff will also be on hand to answer questions and give more information about the benefits of living in sheltered accommodation.

Sheltered housing is purpose built accommodation for older people (aged over 60 and retired) and offers privacy, support to maintain independence, extra security and help in emergencies around the clock.

Deborah Edwards, Lead Councilor for Housing, said: "These newly refurbished sheltered accommodation flats are ideal for older people in Reading. Tenants have their own self-contained home and the security and reassurance that sheltered housing officers and neighbours are close at hand should they need anything."

Reading Borough Council runs 12 sheltered housing schemes.

To apply for Council owned sheltered housing, a housing registration form needs to be completed. Once the Council receives the completed form, applicants will receive a unique reference number allowing them to bid on a sheltered flat when they become available. The sheltered team will offer assistance, if needed, with the bidding process.

The Reading Council may be able to help Council tenants who move to sheltered housing from a family sized property with removal arrangements and costs.

For more information on sheltered housing, call the team on (0118) 939 0217. Information is available at www.reading.gov.uk
